How to organize your Catholic Destination Wedding in Riviera Maya, Mexico

Catholic destination weddings are becoming increasingly popular and many resorts in Mexico are doing a great job of keeping up with demand by offering an array of styles and venue options. It’s most important to note that a Catholic wedding in Mexico is different from a legal wedding. Catholic ceremonies are preceded by a Catholic Priest and must take place in a recognized Catholic chapel. The wedding couple must get the permission by their Parish Priest back home and take the pre-marriage courses in their country so they can get the letter (Nihil Obstat) from his Curia, where the Parish Priest give his approval to the Priest in Mexico in order to celebrate the Catholic marriage.

It’s important to look into all the minor details that are required in order to ensure that you plan according to the rules in Mexico & the specific resort/off resort venue that you are holding your ceremony at. For example, typically the wedding couple must arrive at the hotel a minimum of 3 days prior the ceremony. Often times, certain days of the week will not be available for Catholic ceremonies. You will also need to make sure that you organize your legal marriage to ensure that you are covered both legally and with your religious ceremony.

While this can all feel daunting at first, there are resources available to you to ensure that all steps are taken care of accordingly. First and foremost, speak with a Destination Wedding Travel Specialist who has worked with Catholic Weddings in the past. They can refer you to the most suitable venues for your specific needs.
